Game Master: The next match is sure to be an interesting match up as a relatively new Supreme Mmoatia takes on an Archangel. These are the two teams whose warring ideologies precipitated this Arbitration, so we are sure to see a very heated match between these two. They fly into the octagon to face off in front of Hysteria.

12. Coffey versus 13. Michael

Hysteria: Our final matchup is Coffey versus Michael. Participants ready?

Coffey: Yes.

Michael: As ever.

Hysteria: Fight!

GM: Lofet, Sariel, as the DR, you will have to roll to determine the effectiveness of your participants’ attacks as the match unfolds. You’ve both got 1D20. I will let you both know when to roll, and whether it’s with privilege or not. First I’ll have you roll to see who manages to attack first.

Lofet: 20

Sariel: 9

GM: As Hysteria’s Fight! echoes around the stadium, Coffey leaps at her opponent and with a thrust of her wings she is on Michael. She drives a knee into the armor at Michael’s chest. Lofet, give me Strength roll, Sariel, give me a Resilience roll with privilege.

Lofet: 5

Sariel: 14 and 5

GM: Plus 14, Sariel, because Michael has very high Resilience, for a total roll of 28. Coffey’s knee connects and she hurts herself against Michael’s armor. He counters by swinging his right fist that begins to glow yellow white, hoping to punch Coffey in the face. Sariel, give me a Strength roll, Lofet, roll for Agility.

Lofet: What about Resilience? She’s taking the blow right? She’s so close.

GM: What if Sariel rolls Strength first to see if it’s successful, and then we’ll decide? I was thinking, she has a chance to dodge it, and if her dodge fails, she can roll for Resilience opposed to another Strength roll for Michael.

Lofet: Sounds good. Let’s do it your way.

GM: Then Sariel, give me a Strength roll, Lofet, roll for Agility.

Lofet: 20

Sariel: 3

GM: Michael swings, but Coffey pushes off of him just in time to miss Sariel’s blow, and with the aid of her wings, she jumps back nearly five feet to reset herself. We forgot to roll for damage that Coffey sustained when she kneed Michael’s armor. Sariel, roll 1D8 plus 5D4.

Sariel: 17.

GM: Coffey’s Hit Points are currently 129.

In this special circumstance of the Dance of Hysteria, we will not deduct damage for Armor Class. Normally, a player could roll 1D4 for each multiple of 7 in their armor class to reduce damage, but to facilitate a timely Dance, if a blow lands successfully, then all Damage determined by the attacker’s roll is delt.

Michael’s soul sword begins to manifest in his hand, and when it is long and thick, he swipes it down fast toward his left, then up, and then he slices the air horizontally, so fast that three beams of yellow-white energy zoom off in Coffey’s direction. This is an Essence Attack from Michael, so he will lose a third rounded up or down to the nearest whole number of the Damage dealt by the attack. Sariel, roll Essence Retention.

Sariel: Why not Wisdom? If it’s an Essence Retention attack, wouldn’t his knowledge of the Fonlands inform his ability to wield the Essence?

GM: Essence Retention relates specifically to wielding the Essence, so give me a roll for Essence Retention.

Sariel: Fair enough. Divine 1.

GM: Not only does Michael’s attack miss, but Coffey tries to catch the energy with the hopes of sending it back at him. Lofet, roll Essence Retention.

Lofet: 15

GM: With a 15, Coffey catches the three light beams flying at her. She holds both her hands palms up and the lights slow to a stop in front of her. Then she yells as she thrusts a beam of yellow energy at Michael. Coffey has a Third Heart, and she suffers no penalty for using Essence Attacks. She also has a passive Hit Points regeneration; she regains ten Hit Points on every fifth round of combat. Lofet, roll Essence Retention again to see if her attack is successful.

Lofet: 10.

GM: 10 hits. That’s not a great roll, but it’s a redirected attack and Michael does lose Essence from launching his attack, so roll 4D8 for each energy attack, plus 3D4 for the Attack Bonus to determine the total damage.

Lofet: 26.

GM: Michael’s Hit Points are currently 148.

Michael is knocked back and Coffey follows up her attack by flying into him and swinging to hit him with each of her fists. Lofet, give me a Strength roll.

Lofet: 5

GM: The attack fails, Coffey swings and misses. Michael swings his soul sword, hoping to connect. Sariel, give me an Essence Retention roll. Manifesting the sword uses Essence.

Sariel: 12.

GM: He swings and connects to Coffey’s arm. Give me 1D8 and 5D4 for damage.

Sariel: 17.

GM: Coffey’s Hit Points are currently 112.

Also, Michael will take a third of the damage he dealt to Coffey, so 6 when we round up. Michael’s Hit Points are currently 142.

That’s 3 rounds so far. This is the 4th.

Coffey takes the swipe to her arm and spins, sending yellow energy to her black wings that begin to glow and she spins fast enough to try to slap Michael with her wings twice with each wing, so four times total. Lofet, roll for Essence Retention.

Lofet: 10

GM: That’s is barely a success, but let’s have you roll the D20 for each potential hit to see which ones hit and which miss.

Lofet: 17, 17, 1, 18.

GM: Three out of four is pretty good. Roll 3D8 plus 9D4, that’s 3D4 for each successful smack of Coffey’s wings (her Attack Bonus is 3 multiples of 7 and so she has 3D4 for each successful blow) for Damage.

Lofet: 38.

GM: Michael’s Hit Points are currently 104.

Michael is slapped three times by Coffey’s wings and he counters by swinging his sword again. Sariel, give me an Essence Retention roll.

Sariel: 2.

GM: Michael misses with his sword because Coffey takes flight and she throws both her hands down to blast Michael with more of her yellow light energy. Lofet, roll for Essence Retention.

Lofet: 14.

GM: And Coffey connects with her light. She follows the flow of light energy with both her fists for a one two punch and she doesn’t give Michael any time to react. Lofet, give me two Strength rolls.

Lofet: 19 and 12.

GM: When she is close to Michael, Coffey hooks with a right and then a left, smashing fists into each of his cheeks. Lofet, roll 3D8 for the light blast and two punches, plus 9D4, that’s 3D4 for each attack, to determine total damage.

Lofet: That’s 38.

GM: Michael’s Hit Points are currently 66.

Michael is weary from that blow and I think Sariel will need to give me a roll for Resilience. That’s with privilege and you add 14 to the highest number.

Sariel: 20 and 16.

GM: Thats a 34, so Michael is still on his feet as Coffey lands her blows and then stands in front of him. He’s going to attack again with his sword, but he’s going to punch low, and then swing. Sariel, give me a Strength roll and an Essence Retention roll.

Sariel: 15 and 19.

GM: Both connect. Roll 2D8 plus 10D4 for damage.

Sariel: That’s 38

GM: Coffey’s Hit Points are currently 74.

Also, Michael will take a third of the damage he dealt to Coffey, so 13 when we round up. Michael’s Hit Points are currently 53.

After 5 rounds, Coffey’s Hit Points are 74 and Michael’s are 53. Coffey gains 10 because of her Third Heart.

Coffey’s Hit Points are currently 84.

Michael’s Hit Points are currently 53.

Coffey takes the blow from Michael on her chin, and then she feels the heat of the soul sword slash across her chest. Coffey is breathing heavy, so is Michael, and Coffey flies up and back, away from Micheal to retreat, but never taking her eyes off of him. Coffey retreats close to the edge of the octagon, and Michael seems to get an idea. As Coffey flies in an arch away from him, Michael flies fast to the spot where it is clear she will land and they both arrive there practically at the same time. Michael is going to attempt to knock Coffey out of the octagon with a powerful blow from his soul sword to disorient her long enough to disable the use of her wings and make her fall outside the octagon. Coffey sees Michael’s approach, and as she descends, she flips her body so that her head faces down and her feet trail behind her, with the intention of blasting light energy at Michael to disable his wings and knock him out of the octagon. Lofet, Sariel, you will both roll Essence Retention in opposition and whoever rolls higher will land their attack. Lofet, roll with privilege because Coffey’s Essence Retention is higher. There won’t be a chance for either to save because they are both leaving themselves open.

Lofet: 13 and 18.

Sariel: Divine 1. Blast this child’s toy!

GM: Don’t blame the dice, they are just stand-ins for the role of chance in everything we do. Be mad at fate. But don’t be just yet, fate could prevent this from being a disaster for Michael. Lofet, Coffey lands her attack, roll Essence Retention again to see how effective it is.

Lofet: 11

GM: With an 11, Coffey manages to fly down and dodge Michael’s attack while attacking his wings and knocking him from the octagon. With an 11, though, I’m giving Michael an attempt to save. Does he hit the ground or does he manage to save himself? First, Lofet, roll 1D8 plus 3D4 for damage.

Lofet: Another 11.

GM: Michael’s Hit Points are currently 59. Sariel, give me 1D6 roll. 3 and under, Michael hits the ground, 4 and over, he saves.

Sariel: 3.

GM: Coffey’s blast to Michael’s wings effectively knocks him from the octagon and he is unable to fly to avoid landing out of bounds.

Hysteria: The winner is Coffey!

GM: The spectators give a rousing cheer from the stands and Hysteria appears on the octagon to lift Coffey’s hand in triumph. Everyone is cheering, even the Archangels who seem to have appreciated the effort on display in the octagon. Micheal is bruised and bloody as he stands next to the octagon applauding Coffey. He indicates to the other Archangels that he needs help leaving center court and Sariel has flown down to retrieve him and flies him to the stands with the others. The Supreme Mmoatia, Elder Yumboes, and Umbatia in attendance chant Coffey’s name as she leaves the octagon, a little misshapen and tired, to join her team.
