my attempt at difference. was the creation of Hummer Cross. the gunning of a utility vehicle’s multiple cylinders in front of me and cascading back, sending chills through me as a leaf tapped by rain, quells every frustration long enough to suffice. to say something worth hearing is not hard during Hummer Cross, if you are pushing 75 over a bumpy dirt path and get the urge to yell, everyone will listen and respond in tune, the goon behind will retort, the leader out front comes off as divisive, any of his movements or sounds, and everyone in between exclales, all shoulders and disappointment. and this is Hummer Cross, weaving faint trails of smog emissions, along the narrow road we’ve ridden time and again along the loop, scraping metal, dismantling side stairs–and honestly I am worried how I will descend upon completion of our competition. and maybe that is a bitch’s worry when I fall to fourth and get hit hard rounding a long curve to the left and leaning. intuition is a handy tool in Hummer Cross, and mine tells me to fill the cup holders, all 19, with syrupy ice drinks and plastic capsules of caffeine that I would swallow if my jaw would unhinge, but settle instead to sip. floor spacious enough for light reading, one must keep current with the times, for when the race is done, another awaits and advancement seems contingent upon real knowledge of the ‘unheavy’ in our time.
as I pass I think:
on to the next one
on the next one
on to one
and when I’m passed I say:
no,
not him, a
nybody but him
my Hummer is:
too nice for last
too nice to pass
talented
and when he’s passed he says:
everybody hold up
everything messed up
everyone should be behind
and that is usually towards the end of the race when I realize that I have nothing to lose and gun it for first, throwing dirt into the imaginary stand–because who would spectate?–, hoping that ‘displacing’ can feign synonymy with ‘making up’ before ‘ground.’ despite my place, I am happy with my display and relax more than satisfied eating deep fried anything at the awarding of the HX Cup to our winner.
