The deads of Deads’ Town are randomly selected from the pool of souls of the beings who perish in universe Prime 5 and the Fonlands who are not instantly pulled to the space beyond.
Owuo is a Fonlander of great power, and his creation of Deads’ Town was very deliberately done. Its creation angered Lêgba who expressed the uneasiness of his siblings about Owuo amassing souls on his Disc.
“You are designing a weapon, aren’t you?” Lêgba asked in the main hall of his opaque palace when the two finally discussed it.
“What need do I have for a weapon?” Owuo laughed. “I could kill the mother-father with my venom. There is no weapon, theoretical or otherwise, more powerful than me.”
“Don’t play dumb,” Lêgba said. “Jo told me about your death magic. You’ve disguised it as black magic, my own, but she has seen through your deception. You are able to draw power from the souls of Fonlanders and beings of the other realm, and you are trapping them in your Deads’ Town to use like a battery to tap when you finally decide to move against the mother-father and all of the Vodun.”
Owuo chuckled and began to pace a circle around Lêgba. “You are letting the others get to you, friend. You really think I have designs on killing all of you? What’s the end game, there? If I kill you all, then that means the death of every Fonlander because I will not take your places lording over them and they will look to someone, something to fill the void you leave, so they would have to go. And then what? Everything is just Deads’ Town? That is boring. If everything is dead then I have nothing to kill and I am more than just death. I am evil, friend, or have you forgotten me?”
“Have you forgotten the only condition of our interaction, friend?” Lêgba retorted. “I cannot call a being of power who revels in evil a friend, and if we are not friends, then we are enemies and I will banish you to the underside.”
“Lêgba, you are describing the entirety of our existence on this Disc, we have always been in conflict and I have always been evil. And we have always loved one another, and I do not believe that we will ever be enemies. I am not your twin, and you are too soft hearted to banish anything to the nothing on the underside. If this were not your nature, then you would not be Lêgba, and there would be no need for me. I exist because I must…”
Lêgba was fuming. Owuo had been right about one thing, his siblings had convinced him that Owuo would be the ruin of the Fonlands and discovery of the Deads’ Town only confirmed what Sakpata, Agê, and Xêvioso feared the most, that Owuo was seeking to upgrade his powers so that he could take on all of the Vodun after killing the mother-father. Lêgba, Jo, Agbe and Gu never really feared Owuo, but the discovery of the Deads’ Town was so strange because it didn’t seem like something Owuo would use his energy to make. And Lêgba wasn’t satisfied with his reasoning after their talk. So he acted rashly. Lêgba is a shape shifting wielder of black magic that, along with Jo’s white magic, and Gu’s gray magic, is ideal for shaping reality. And Lêgba is quick.
In the blink of Owuo’s eyes, Lêgba extended a hand and a short curved blade materialized then flew from his hand to lodge into Owuo’s chest. Owuo doesn’t have a Third Heart, but he has an organ that produces and pumps aduro, his venom that is his lifeblood, through his body, and Lêgba pierced this organ with his blade. Lêgba was pleased, even at the realization that Owuo had buried his curved cutlass into Lêgba’s back. It was worth it as both of them crumbled to their knees. Owuo smirked and Lêgba returned it and they both fell on their faces as their eyes closed.
