The Gold:
The Justices Grimoire
or
The Book of Definitions and Names
The Libraries on the Disc of Legba contain many written works, but only three among them are considered Grimoires, the name given on the European continent to books of spells and magical rites and rituals, materials and lore. The first to be created was the Gold, also known as the Book of Definitions and Names, or the Grimoire of the Justices of the Disc of Xevioso. It was created long ago because of a case before the High Court of Fierce Justice that required commonly accepted terms and descriptions to determine if the defendant was under the effects of the magics of another Fonlander at the time they committed a grisly murder. In order to decide the case, the presiding Justice, Oduduwa, the High Justice and Judge of the Court of Fierce Justice, gathered her peers to set down descriptions of the Essence abilities of Fonlanders on the Disc of Xevisoso and the effects of those abilities on the environment and other Fonlanders. The product was the Book of Definitions and Names, also known as the Gold, which has been expanded over time to include detailed descriptions of virtually all permutations of the use of Divine Essence or Divine Magic, which is magic bestowed by the Vodun and the Mother-Father.
The Violet:
The Death Witch Coven Grimoire
or
The Book of Conjure and Chaos
After the threat of the Death Witch Coven that resulted in their banishment from the Disc of Jo, Oduduwa began studying Death Magic with the intention of creating a Gold book equivalent that would eventually become known as the Violet, or the Book of Conjure and Chaos. The Violet was co-authored by the Strange Witch, formerly of the Death Witch Coven before Oduduwa said her Tinyalari name in her presence and she reverted to her Tinyalari form. She kept the title Strange Witch and founded the Essence Witch Coven that inhabits an entire Cotton-Wood tree that follows a similar movement through the space of Jo’s Disc as the Cotton-Wood home of the Luminary Nyame.
Both the Gold and the Violet are pervasive on the Discs of the Fonlands and they are used as textbooks for students of magic–Fonlanders identified as Vodun Priests, Sorcerers, Witches, Wizards–at each of the Apprentice Compounds that exist on the Discs that were created in relatively recent history to foster a scholarly understanding of the powers of Fonlanders. Each Apprentice Compound is named for the book that is used as the primary manual; there are Gold Apprentice Compounds on the Discs of Xêvioso, Gu, Sakpata, Agê, Jo and Agbe and there are Violet Apprentice Compounds on the Discs of Lêgba, Xêvioso, Agê, Gu, and Jo.
The Green:
The Mmoatia Grimoire
or
The Book of Soil and Persuasion
Ahdis of the Deep, Supreme Mmoatia, created the Green in very recent history and it has been praised for its thorough catalogue of the distinct abilities of Fonlanders of the Disc of Agê in more detail than is covered in the Gold. It details properties of the foliage of the Discs of Agê and Jo that were not widely known and revealed that high level wielders of Green Essence magic could tap into the Pattern Magic of the Gold that is concerned with the fundamental properties of Divine Essence and the Fonlands. Green magic users are able to control things because they can compel names in the language of Trees that is also the language of the Mother-Father and not widely known or used by Fonlanders other than Lêgba who only uses it with the Mother-Father.
