Season of the Witch

We hope you’re enjoying the special. We’ve got some more Halloween recommendations for you before we dive back into the hair raising debut of witches in the Dark Parallel.

Roy: I know this movie came out months ago, but I only watched it a couple weeks ago. Prey, the Predator prequel, on Hulu isn’t the scariest movie, but if you’re in the mood for a creepy stalker movie that leans more action, I’d highly recommend it. I’ve never seen a Predator movie, maybe Alien versus Predator but I couldn’t tell you what happened in it, so you don’t need any backstory whatsoever to enjoy this movie. The main character is a badass and it’s cool to see her out hunt the hunter.

VIV: I love Samurai Jack. I think it’s the greatest animated show ever made and I love the way it uses quiet moments. Genndy Tartakovsky has a really nice artistic aesthetic and I enjoy it in Samurai Jack, in his Clone Wars shorts, and in his current series Primal, which is my Halloween recommendation. There is no dialogue in Primal, which is about a caveman surviving with his dinosaur friend after evil dinosaurs eat both their families. It’s a sad story, and it’s really violent and visceral. There is an episode in the first season with the creepiest looking bats that are as big as pterodactyls, and there’s a giant spider. It’s on HBO Max if you’re interested.

Max: While I was reading Werewolf by Night on my public library app, where you can read books and comic books for free with your library card, I saw that they had Tomb of Dracula as well. I don’t like it as much as Werewolf by Night, but I still like it a lot more than superhero comics. It’s interesting to see how Marvel writers built off the lore in Bram Stoker’s Dracula to fit him into the Marvel Universe. And like Werewolf by Night, I find that the story gets much better as it progresses, maybe because the writers gained a better idea of the story they were telling.

Wes: I’ve heard a lot about Junji Ito over the years and I finally sat down and read some of his work. He has a lot of work that’s been translated and I got a collection of his short horror stories called Deserter. The title story was really good and I won’t spoil the ending because it was the first thing I’ve read in a long time where I didn’t guess the ending. For most of the stories in the collection, I thought he would have benefitted from making them longer, but they were good for what they were. His series Spirals is proof that he benefits from more space to tell a story. Spirals is a weird series and the imagery will haunt your nightmares. I highly recommend it.

Tonight:

The witches are all over town, it seems, and Nora is their latest victim. After a tragic loss, she tries to distract herself with the levity of her neighborhood holiday preparations, but it’s hard to get away from grief in this town.

The Witching Hour: “Nora wiped a tear from her cheek and leaned her head onto Steven’s shoulder. The couple’s son, Noah, had died under mysterious circumstances and after a police investigation and autopsy, it was determined that his death had been an accident.”

Miriro sits down with the Deities of the Moon, to let them in on her plans. They are not happy to hear what she is doing and Miriro is forced to demonstrate the powers of the Earth witch.

Witch Moon: “”What will you do with the Witch Moon?” Hecate asked Miriro. They each sat on a log in the center of the grove around a fire as the sun was setting. Khonshu, Mawu, and the Morrigan sat around the fire as well and they all looked at Miriro expectantly.”

Wazad leads a team in search of the witches and she and Gregory speak to the Master of Universal Arcana who is not currently on Earth. He recommends a new ally for Wazad to recruit before confronting the witches and I’m excited for the return of the fastest hands on any side of the Mississippi.

Remarkable: “Before Wazad reinforced the barrier around the garden where Tolot slept in his tree to keep him contained and undetectable to anyone looking for him through arcane means, and before she opened a portal next to Paul’s large truck next to the lake where it was parked, she sat inside a room of the Museum that was optimal for deep concentration.”
