An Earther in the Fonlands

Epilogue

“That is a fascinating story,” the Vodun said.

“Are my stories really worth the effort it took for you to arrive here?”

“You said it yourself, there is nothing like you in the superstructure. Speaking to a living universe is a privilege that very few in existence can say they’ve enjoyed.”

“You are the only thing that I have talked to, the other Vodun just observed from afar. And they don’t come as much as you do. I haven’t seen anything but you in a long while.”

“Unlike my siblings, I know the value of the knowledge you have. When we discovered that we were able to traverse the space outside of everything, we believed that to be an achievement in itself, proof of our mastery of arcana. But when Xêvioso discovered you, I knew that being able to speak with you was the real prize that we had won. You see, my siblings think very small. We are the children of a being such as yourself and the parent universes that made you. With your help, I might be able to create a universe in my own image.”

“So that’s what this is, tiny Vodun? You are seeking the secrets of universal creation? I don’t think that the creation of new universes is dictated by anything other than the whims of the superstructure.”

The Vodun smiled slyly. “Imagination is a very powerful thing. It was nice to speak with you, Talj. I hope that you will grant me an audience in the future.”

“It was enjoyable to spend time with you, tiny Vodun.”

“You can call me Lêgba, that’s what my friends call me.”

This week:

Zacchaeus and his new friend Coffey were seized by the Lêgba. Where did he take them? I’ll give you one guess.

The Deft Hands of Zacchaeus: “Upon standing, Zacchaeus realized that the device that had been strapped to his right hand was no longer there and he looked down at his feet, at the clearing of the mist and the reflection of the vast sky above him that was dominated by billowing white, gray, rose, blue, green, and golden clouds that were unmoving.”

– – –

Coffey is having a hard time after the Lêgba took her from the Umbatia swamp. But hard times don’t last forever.

The Divine Essence: “As she stood in the lush forest of the disc of Agê, Coffey felt a feeling she had never known before. She felt calm. Before her death, Coffey’s mother, Alita, had taught her how to survive in the world of white men, and the lesson that she had learned as the most important was to always be on your toes.”

The PRL Team-Up comes to an end as Xêvioso and his brother Gû continue the search for the real Lêgba.

Finding Lêgba: “Gû and Xêvioso had completed their search of Lêgba’s disc and came up empty. They stood before the Celestial Library and rather than wander the maze of the Library to find an exit, Xêvioso summoned lightning that struck the sand of the desert before them and an oval portal opened.”

What is up with Saturday? Does he have magical powers? Is that how he managed to keep up with Thursday? The strangeness continues.

The Black Man Who Was Thursday: “But Thursday stopped on the sidewalk and eyed the old man, and his dread became skepticism. The old man didn’t have the bearing to siphon his power, he did good to sit in the presence of Azalaan, the Idiot Thursday God, or whatever his full name is now. To glimpse even a fraction of the inconceivable power of Thursday would drive a man to lunacy.”

The grandmother of Zora Crowder, Mary Smith, died in the home that her husband bought for her. It is a lovely house that the entire family knows as home.

Sun of the Morning:  “Mary Smith was literally on her deathbed, in the home her husband had bought in the sixties in northeast Ladoga. It was a nice house, two stories with a covered front porch. Mary enjoyed watching the family she and Sam had made fill the house and the yard.”

The more time that passes since Thanksgiving, the more worried Wes becomes. A conversation with his father-in-law doesn’t help things very much.

Come Close: “’If you’re worried, you have to call him,’ Valeria said. We were driving home from a friend’s St. Patrick’s Day party. I was driving because Valeria had had a few too many, and she was in a very talkative mood.”
