IV.  – Life in Marvelous Times (2010)

What does it mean to have a favorite number: A favorite is a distraction from mundane choices, a shortcut in cases when a question arises and one is forced to make a selection; ask me how much I want, I want IV because on previous occasions beneficial things happened or triumphs were met.

Additionally, the number 4 has pristine aesthetic qualities: Many sharp edges at both head and foot, one defensively guarding aft, another still, bearing forward–the crux of two strong arms.

One could nestle ersatz-nuclear in 4, never-bare above with a sound floor provided, to sprawl out in sleep or huddle invalid for days for no better reason than to utilize the space.

I write 4 on notebooks, put it prominently in passwords, it bests the number 3 with little effort, maybe it is the connotation, but in light of 4, 3 is an abomination; consider it, throwing all its efforts forward and comically susceptible to tumble backward at the meeting of any advancing force, no matter how minute.

If 4 were perfect, though, it would not stand on just one leg, not with so much jutting obtrusively out. But if by chance 4 does lose its footing forward, it can rest assured that its pretty face is safe.

I give credit, too, to the homonym: constant repetition of the word for plays a big role in the instant response, I babble through as many as eight fors in any given attempt at defining a thing, so ask me how many and you should not be surprised.

At times I lean on that stability, semblances being hard to come by.
