Someone Else’s Dream (Absofacto, Trinix) Reprise
Roy is quiet. I like that about him. He’s not quiet all the time, but most people know him as a very quiet man who is very studious and always lost in his thoughts about work, or completely lost in his work. He’s the best scientist at Phytoquela because he loves the work.
I love Roy, everything about him, even though I’m not supposed to. It’s supposed to be a ruse. But I knew the minute I laid eyes on him in person that he would be my wife and I stared at him for so much longer than I realized on that elevator.
I knew him before I met him but it was easy to see him as just the black and white ink of his resume that I memorized because I saw it as often as I did. He has an impressive resume, for sure, but back then, he was just a naive man who completely misunderstood the significance of the supposed cosmic event that seemed to allow animals to speak like human beings. I’ve witnessed this speech, it’s hardly speech in the way humans do it. Some are very practiced and I can understand why people think it’s so amazing, but simple speech doesn’t equal humanity. It’s not cause to change the order of the world as we know it.
But here we are, in the so-called True Enlightenment. People are marrying their pets for Christ’s sake, everything has been turned upside down. People are people, we’ve been stewards of this planet for long enough and talking isn’t enough to cede that to whales or bears or whatever else is supposedly more wise than man. Where is theit technology and their literature? Their history?
Roy doesn’t eat meat. He won’t eat anything that isn’t synthetic. I’m working on it. The others notice and they ask about it. It makes them question his loyalty to the cause, his loyalty to me. We eat not only because we enjoy it, in these times it’s a political statement, a demonstration of our dominion as humans and Roy’s rejection of it has only become more glaring over time.
It’s been a few years since he discovered my plot against him, a plot I carried out for the organization. I went undercover at Phytoquela because their influence on modern life is outsized due to the amount of money they make and the organization was interested in learning the extent of their technologies. After my initial reports to the organization that included copies of files from the company’s computers, I was told to seduce Roy and try to bring him to our side. His work was impressive, and he seemed very lonely, but eager for romance and meaningful connection with someone as evidenced by his profile on gay dating websites on his work computer.
I didn’t see that stuff. I got a summary and the resume, his picture. Then I saw him and I fell in love.
He says he loves me. I really want to believe him.
We have two dogs that share our home, another show of human dominion, but one that Roy can stomach. He loves our dogs and he treats them like children. I talk about them to my friends in the organization like they’re my property, how valuable a breed they are, but I wouldn’t talk about them that way to Roy.
Roy is my wife and I will protect him. I will make him understand the world the way it should be and we will be happy in that future together. The organization promised me that for my successes so far. I just have to make sure Roy is really on board.
