“It would make sense that Dr. Eakran is recruiting.”

Dr. Worthington sits outside with Adam and Manuel across from him in their usual spot. Manuel is agitated by the doctor and Adam is pretending to share the same feelings. He is mostly looking for chances to get away; lapses in the attention of the doctor’s security that would allow him to take advantage to escape through the high shrubs. He had cased the back of the facility; there is no fence that encloses it and there is a thick, wooded area that he and Manuel could escape into if they ran fast enough. Under normal circumstances, Adam is sure that he and Manuel could outrun even the best security detail, but they are heavily drugged and they will need a significant distraction to gain the headstart Adam anticipates is necessary to make the trees.

“Maybe he is not aware of the Consortium,” Worthington continues, “but he finds out about the experiments, dispatches his friends to check it out and you all decide to take matters into your own hands? Is that it? How did you come to know Dr. Eakran?”

“We don’t know who you’re talking about,” Manuel says.

“So maybe it’s just the kid with the device, the one that makes things, and you all are just pawns.”

Worthington sighs. It’s been months and he doesn’t know more about the men in front of him. He is ready to wipe their memories and release them, they have been no real help. They are law enforcement, good men who are hard to break. He would have to scramble their minds good to erase the past half year or so.

“Just pawns,” Manuel parrots back at Worthington. “So just kill us already, I’m tired of that room.”

Worthington laughs.

“I’m not going to kill you. I just have to make sure you can’t find your way back here before I let you go.”

He smiles and Adam stares at him. Worthington is not quite right, he is deranged, Adam can feel it.

“I guess we’ll be doing this, talking just the three of us, much less in the future,” Worthington says and stands.

As he walks away Adam notices that the guards all gather up on him, which is unusual. Worthington had rushed out and they all ran to keep up, like they forgot about Adam and Manuel. Until they remembered and two of the guards came back to escort then back inside.

Maybe it is too late, maybe they will be released soon enough anyway, but who knows what kind of memory wiping Worthington has planned and Adam will avoid it if possible.
