Dark Angels

– Issue 3 –

Let’s back up in the story of Ivan and Clay, the point of which is to demonstrate that even though the two didn’t know each other when they first met in the hospital after Ivan was shot, the two had been in close proximity to one another for the majority of their lives. In fact, in all of their lives, the two have never been separated by more than a few hundred miles. This is due to a phenomenon related to the extraordinary abilities that they demonstrate, but we will get into that later.

Ivan and Clay were born in the same hospital, and though they were not born on the same day, Clay didn’t leave the hospital until the day after Ivan’s birth. None of this was intentional on the part of the pair’s parents, they had no knowledge of one another and both sets of parents stayed at the hospital for as long as they were medically advised to do so.

Ivan was born in the middle of the night during a lightning storm that produced no rain, and witnesses say that they had never seen the sky light up with streaks of lightning as it did that night, and some say they saw streaks of green lightning in addition to the white lightening that  brighted the sky in an abnormal way.

Workers of the hospital who were on staff during that time, roughly twenty years ago, generally remember that night because the maternity ward was struck by lightning, and though there was considerable damage to the roof, there was no fire and the building did not lose power.

Neighbors who lived in the vicinity of both Ivan and Clay’s families around the time their births, place the childhood homes of the two no more than a mile apart. The two attended the same schools, though it is unclear if they knew one another then, though by all accounts, their first meeting was sometime during or shortly after their senior year of high school.

Clay’s neighbors do not recall that his family took vacations of any kind as Clay got older, only when he was young, before his father stopped boxing, and they usually piled into the family van for road trips to the South Carolina coast. Though the dates can’t be confirmed, it is also believed the Ivan’s family frequented the South Carolina coast in his youth.

Ivan only left the state of North Carolina one time during his youth as confirmed by the librarian Jill who knew him well. “He told me that he only went to Mexico once and he was there for maybe ten days.”

This would seem to be the only exception to the proximity rule, except Clay may have traveled to Mexico when he was about ten years old, the same age that Ivan was when he traveled there. Clay and his mother attended a church that sent mission trips to Guadalajara, Mexico every summer and some witnesses who lived in his neighborhood or attended his school say that he and his mother were gone for a couple weeks, and when they returned, the parents got into a fight that seemed to culminate in the death of Clay’s mother, though her death was ultimately ruled an accident and his father was convicted for murdering her while driving drunk.

The Encyclopedia of the Known Universe lists among the Notable Beings of Universal Antiquity two beings known as Fomorn and Mog, who fit the description of First People according to the definition put forth in many texts obtained from the Consortium of Human History. If the CHH texts are correct, then there was a race of beings on Earth before the emergence of human predecessor species, well before in fact, so long ago that they were able to evolve to sentience from alien material that was deposited on Earth by an asteroid, and they existed in civilizations that seemed to have a strong connection to magic and mysticism, though all evidence of their societies have been erased by time. It is believed that early humans mingled with this race of First People who managed to survive planetwide catastrophes in small bands scattering the continents, presumably through the use of their magic.

All of that sounds like a fairy tale, anthropological fiction, or anthro fiction for the hashtag, but then there is the story of Fomorn and Mog, the Notable Beings of Universal Antiquity that the Encyclopedia posits existed at the dawn of humanity. Mog was a giant, as all First People were, and Fomorn was the son of a giant and a human mother, who is said to have been the first Alia (more on that in Sun Child). Mog had the ability to shapeshift and change his size, as some Giants were able to do, and Fomorn had the ability to levitate and he defended his mother and anyone under her protection with his life. The two met when the scorned lover of his mother, a man called Ssi, chased him away from his homeland that was in the vicinity of modern day Ethiopia, and he went flying for as long as he could stand it, until he crash landed off the coast of modern day Ireland, where Fomorn and his family lived. Shortly after the two met and became friends, a mysterious rip appeared in space and green energy poured through that inundated Fomorn and Mog, and it significantly upgraded their abilities. Eventually the two were cursed by the first Alia because she thought their friendship made her son neglect his responsibilities to his people, and she stripped them of their extraordinary powers and doomed them to an eternity of a lowly life experiencing the worst conditions of the people in the area where they found themselves.

Separated from the close friends, the green power they shared hopped around space searching for vessels that resembled the ones from which they had been separated. The green energy was actually two combined, a blue and a yellow energy that had bonded with Fomorn and Mog respectively, and the blue and yellow energies were separated in their pursuit of vessels that closely resembled the two they had known. Fomorn’s descendants has moved out of the horn of Africa to spread in many directions, and Mog’s were in the vicinity of Ireland. Throughout history, as the current host of the blue and yellow energies die, a new host is chosen this way, and when the two hosts are linked as Ivan and Clay were, their powers manifest as green.

– Issue 1 –

It is said that the first humans emerged in present day Ethiopia, and a girl was born there, amidst much turmoil. She was not the first human woman, neither was her mother, but she lived in the early days of humanity.

There was a heat wave that dried up all of the rivers and lakes and the day that the girl was born, her mother had not tasted water in a full day. She died as her husband saved the girl who did not cry, but stared, very concerned for her mother. After her mother died, she cried so loudly that it disturbed every human on Earth, and some believe that it was this wail that called her to the attention of the Gods who endowed her with extraordinary abilities that would manifest in her womanhood.

She would grow up and be called Mou, and her daughters throughout time would acquire many names, among them, the Alia.

A girl with the name Alia was born in the state of North Carolina about twenty years ago. She was born in a crime scene, or so it seemed to the emergency medical team that found her. Her umbilical cord was still attached and she hadn’t been properly cleaned. Analysis of the bathtub where she was discovered showed that all the blood found inside the bathroom likely belonged to her mother.

It is hard to trace the movements of the girl from that starting point, though it seems that she has managed to leave an indelible impression on at least one person that she meets in each new place that she finds herself. A teacher at an elementary school in the county where she was born recalls a girl named Alia who spent her recess periods staring at the sun.

“I stopped her almost everyday, I said the same thing, you’re gonna go blind. But she would just smile at me and skip away, I’m sure she just found another private spot to do her sungazing. She was strange. She wasn’t in my class, but her teacher said she never actually read anything. Like she didn’t look at words in books and read them as they were written, like probably she couldn’t see right? From looking at the sun. But any time she was called on to read something, she said the words as they were written, word for word. It was crazy. I never saw it, but that’s what she say.”

The janitor of an area orphanage that partnered with a big church in the county of Alia’s birth, remembers a girl with the name who would sneak into the supply closets and steal candles when most of the staff went home on Friday nights.

“I found her one evening, she musta thought I had gone home. She had arranged all these candles in the dark on the pews and she was knelt down in front of the altar where the preacher usually give his sermon on Sundays. I shoulda stopped it, it’s a fire hazard and all, but it felt like a sacred ritual, and she was the sweetest girl. Like she was in a world of her own and when she was back in this one, she was always smiling. Heard she didn’t have nobody in this world, nobody, but she was a bright light. I caught her more than once lighting the candles and praying. And I stopped her one night before she was about to blow them all out. I asked her why she do it. She said she wasn’t really praying. It was how she talked to her parents. She said she had dreams about them in the stars and she lit all the candles to represent the brightest stars she could remember from the dream. She missed her parent a awful lot, I could tell. She never knew them, she said, but she wanted to and her dreams had made that feel possible.”

She was considered strange and she entered a recovery program in Columbia, South Carolina when she was a teenager. She emerged years later, a companion of the Maker who used the name Amazing Elroy. It is said that she is able to tell the future.
