The Physical Realm
John, also known as Pomp, performed a reset at his leaving, but because Maria had managed to stop time, it did not take effect until Maria says go with all of her might.
It works. The world starts again, though it is unclear how many people were affected by the stop.
Alia remembers everything that had transpired, but she is shocked to be in a car headed to Clay’s house. Gertrude drives and Vita and Yuri argue in the backseat. Nothing about the scenario makes any sense, the three of them are opposed to road trips, and Gertrude and Vita would not have agreed to an extended trip with Yuri. It makes sense that John had done something, just like after church, and Alia wonders what they believe has happened that has led them to their current road trip.
“Alia, the next time your friend Wendy wants to have a party, she can come to us,” Vita says. She has a hand up in Yuri’s face and talks over him, ignoring his drunken boasts about winning some party game they had been playing. “And I swear to god if you ever make me spend time with this man again, I will break his nose.”
“She just jealous, Alia,” Yuri says. “She knows that I’m all yours and she don’t have a chance.”
Gertrude cocks an eyebrow at Alia and she notices it.
“I’ll talk to him when we get back,” Alia says with a sigh.
“Or just get married already,” Gertrude jokes.
At Wendy’s house, she is sitting in her backyard in the garden. Tendayi is with her and so is Anesuishe. They all laugh and joke, happy to see one another after a long time. Wendy told them about the dust up in the IBF basement, how she is skeptical of Dr. Eakran, about the other medium in the basement, and her relative Stephanie who is currently with them and they all welcome her warmly. No one seems to miss Isheanesu at all. It’s as though no remembers that he even existed.
At the invisible home of Dr. Thomas Eakran, the doctor is sitting with Maria and Darker in the living room. The TV is off and they all sit quietly.
“I seriously had no idea that he was responsible for your death,” Eakran says. “If I had known…” he thinks on it and then he says, “…well honestly I would have done the exact thing that I have done. I can end his life in a second, if that’s what you want.”
“It’s not what I want,” Darker says. “I would like to speak with him though. And you and I have a lot to talk about.”
Maria puts a hand on Darker’s shoulder and he shoots her a quick look and smile.
“Maria, do you mind leaving us alone? We can go over your notes tomorrow,” Eakran says graciously.
“No problem,” Maria says as she leaves.
When the two are alone, Darker kisses Eakran. Eakran pushes him away and they share a tense and quiet moment.
John ceased to exist on the physical plane and he returned to a resting place, joining energies beyond the physical realm. He was next to the voice and she gloated.
You could not do it. They will never use you for anything again. And look how different things are now. Things will be interesting again.
