The PRL Event: Darker Resurrection 17
Wendy is at her best under pressure. She doesn’t have time to second guess herself. She just acts and her instincts kick in.
She has been under varying types of pressure since the emergence of her ancestors months ago, and she had weathered very difficult circumstances and even saved some lives. Wendy has proven herself the true inheritor of the Brave mantle and she wears it proudly.
But in this eleventh installment of the adventures of the Brave Chimutengwende, Wendy comes face to face with a past challenge that ultimately got the best of her; the beautiful Maria Moreno.
The Dedicated Women
Wendy and Vita follow Gertrude, Alia, and Yuri to Eakran’s house. John is with Wendy in the backseat and he had promised not to talk unless spoken to. When they arrive along the stretch of empty country road where Eakran’s house is supposed to be, Gertrude stops her car and Wendy drives past them and parks her car in a clearing of trees. She and Vita walk the distance back to where Alia, Yuri, and Gertrude are standing next to their car and they find a place to watch without being noticed. Suddenly John lands near them.
“What are we here for?” John asks. “We have about a day to get this done before existence proves me useless.”
“I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about half the time,” Vita says.
“We’re back up, John,” Wendy says. “Also, I can see ghosts, maybe we can find the one you’re looking for together.”
“How? That’s a dumb idea,” John says.
Vita tries not to, but she cracks up laughing.
“Fine!” Wendy says, sounding more angry than she is. “But anyway, we don’t even know that this doctor has the soul, we just think he knows something.”
“Great,” John says and he sits down in the grass next to Vita.
“Alia’s on it, weird man,” Vita says and she pats his shoulders. “Aren’t you the one who said that she’s incredible?”
He nods and they are all puzzled when they look down the road where Alia and Gertrude had been only to see their empty car.
“Where did they go?” Wendy asks and she wanders toward the road.
A car slows next to her and Wendy sees a woman behind the steering wheel. She gets out and leans over the top of the car and she has a look of surprise that mirrors Wendy’s.
“Maria?” Wendy says it like a question.
“Wendy?” Maria smiles, happy to see a familiar face that she remembered as kind. “What are you doing out here?”
“I could ask you the same thing,” Wendy says and she approaches the car, then stops when she remembers her past with the beautiful woman. She had made Wendy feel used and that feeling had soured all of her relationships with people with physical bodies.
“You’re looking for Eakran aren’t you?” Maria asks. “The guy with the wings with you?”
“You live with him?” Wendy asks.
“We are very close work associates for the moment yeah, but Wendy I feel like we should talk. I hate how I left things…”
“It’s cool,” Wendy interrupts. “You got what you wanted. And I finally understand just how wrong about you I was. Whose in the car?”
“A new friend. It’s why I’m here. I brought him to see Eakran.”
Neither Wendy nor Maria notice the struggle behind Wendy in a ditch. John had suddenly jumped up ready to fight when the car slowed on the road and Vita had jumped to contain him, but the longer Wendy and Maria talked, the more agitated John became. Vita had been talking him down and holding him back and then they both slipped and tumbled into the ditch just as Darker got out of the car. Wendy giggles at the sight of the big black man squeezed into the tiny workout clothes of a woman. And it doesn’t register at first, but then she really looks at the man and his soul looks unlike anything she has ever seen before.
John claws his way out of the ditch and despite Vita’s effort to shut him up, he manages to stand and runs to Wendy’s side.
“That’s it. It’s the resurrected soul!” John yells and then he extends a hand that is suddenly struck by lightning, leaving a long, flat sword that John swings around himself before coming to a ready stance.
“Drop the sword!” Maria yells at John and she is surprised when John does not obey her commands. It is clear that John is winding up to attack Darker, whom she knows would not mind dying, but whom she does not want to die, and she commands Wendy to stand between John and Darker.
“Move!” John yells.
“I can’t!” Wendy yells and then she see the ghost of Stephanie standing near Maria.
“She is doing this,” Stephanie says and she puts hands over Maria’s eyes. Maria does not know that Stephanie is there, but she is unable to see and her command over Wendy breaks.
“You’re an alien too?” Wendy asks. “Is that how you used me before? Mind control?”
“I’m not trying to hurt you Wendy,” Maria says when Stephanie retreats and she regains her sight. “I just don’t want wings over there to hurt Darker.”
“What kind of name is Darker?” Wendy asks. “Is he the devil or something?”
“It doesn’t matter what he is!” John yells and he raises his sword. “I will return him to his next existence.”
Wendy is furious at Maria and she is ready to fight, even if it means siding with the annoying John.
John jumps and then takes flight with his sword, toward Darker who is still next to Maria’s car.
“Get in!” Maria yells and he gets inside just as the car revs up and starts to speed away. It doesn’t go anywhere before Vita has produced a gun and shot out the tires.
John lands on top of the car and smashes a window with his bare hands. He reaches inside and grabs Darker who does not really struggle or resist.
“Don’t let them kill you,” Maria yells to Darker. “You have a new life. You can love him this time.”
Darker barely hears her and it is all for nothing anyway, John is much stronger. But Maria will not give up and she commands Vita to aim at John.
“Stop!” Maria yells. “Everybody just stop. This is crazy.”
John does not stop, even though everyone else has, including the spirits. He pulls at Darker and eventually he drags the man through the broken glass that still frames the car window. It is a horrible sight to witness, Darker essentially shredded until he collapses on the ground in a bloody mess, screaming in pain.
Maria is furious and she turns her rage on Wendy.
“I asked you to stop!” Maria yells loudly and everything stops.
