Energy never diminishes in the universe. It changes form, though, and this seems to be a constant of the universe, that energy is always changing, always in flux.
Technology allows us to harness energy to various results; technology defined as the materials that beings of the universe manipulate from their naturally occurring state into something new. Harnessing energy can be used for quick transportation, for illumination of dark locations, even to power the various devices that have been manufactured by different beings. It is true that every prominent, sentient civilization in the known universe is dependent on technology that allows for the manipulation or harnessing of energy. This seems to be a very necessary feature for a society to thrive and those civilizations with the best methods of manipulating energy are the most technologically advanced.
All beings of the known universe are complex systems that rely on energy for their normal function. Energy, or the need for it, is the great unifier; no being can live without it.
Energy can be used to do good for societies, but it can also be extremely destructive. Though, the phrasing of that sentence suggests that destruction cannot be a good thing. It can be good or bad, but the librarians of the Bromeris Ultimate Library surmise that energy manipulation for destructive purposes is most commonly used to wage war.
