Owners vs Renters

On every planet in the universe, there are concepts of ownership, or the idea that a person, or being, can possess something and dictate the handling and care of that thing. The Hafjeris are a dual caste society, owners and renters, and it is unheard of, if not impossible for someone to change their caste. The owners have handed down property to their offspring for centuries and because renters have inherited the burden of renting, owners are never worried about losing property because they can always raise revenue from someone looking to rent despite the conditions of their rental. The Hafjeris renting class rents everything from homes to modes of transportation and even clothing. The owner class is very wary of selling property and when sales of property do occur, it only happens between owners. The renting class generally harbors disdain for the owning class, but stifle their feelings for fear of reprisal from their landlords.

Owning and renting on Hafjeran is essential to the functioning of the planet’s economy though most of the planet’s financial resources end up in the hands of the owning class. The renting class enjoy few luxuries that are common to the owning class and most learn to get by with what they have and never really strive for more.
